Core Web Vitals in Plain English: A Business Owner’s Guide
What Google actually measures about your website’s experience, why it affects your rankings and ads, and what to ask your developer.
Google grades your website on three experience metrics, and the grades affect both your organic rankings and your Google Ads costs. Here's what they mean without the jargon.
LCP — how fast the main thing appears
Largest Contentful Paint measures when the biggest element on screen (usually your hero image or headline) finishes loading. Under 2.5 seconds is good. Oversized images and slow hosting are the usual culprits.
INP — how fast the page reacts
Interaction to Next Paint measures the lag between a tap and the page responding. Under 200ms feels instant. Heavy scripts — often bloated themes and too many tracking pixels — are what push this into 'sluggish'.
CLS — does the page jump around
Cumulative Layout Shift measures visual stability. If your visitors try to tap a button and an ad shoves it down the page, that's CLS — and Google notices.
Why you should care commercially
Speed is compounding: faster pages rank better, earn higher Quality Scores (cheaper ads), and convert more of the traffic you already pay for. A 1-second improvement routinely moves conversion rates by double digits.
What to ask your developer
Run your site through PageSpeed Insights and ask three questions: what is our LCP element and how do we ship it faster; which scripts can we defer or delete; and are image dimensions reserved so nothing shifts. Those three conversations fix most sites.
